About Our Center...
Bells Ferry Learning Center (BFLC) is a private, family-owned and operated childcare center that has served the families of Woodstock and Acworth since 1989. The current owner, Sharon Foster, bought the center in July, 2001. Twenty-five percent of the staff members, including Assistant Director Bonnie Viken, have been with the center since Sharon became the owner. While the national average tenure in childcare is six months, we are proud that our average tenure is three years.
In 2006, the center earned national accreditation. The center is proud to also have been named a Georgia Center of Recognition, the only center in Cherokee County to have achieved both state and national accreditation at that time.
In 2004, the center initiated a partnership with the Cherokee County Board of Education to pilot the first Georgia Pre-K Inclusion classroom in the county. The center’s initiative enabled children with special needs to benefit from participation in an inclusive environment with highly successful results.
Setting the Highest Standards...
Our goal at BFLC is to provide a safe, nurturing, and educational atmosphere where families feel welcome and comfortable. The staff enjoys establishing long-term relationships with the families they serve and are pleased that many children who start the program in the infant room remain connected to the center through the after-school program.
Professional development is very important to BFLC and many of the staff members have advanced certification, diplomas, and/or degrees. Demonstrating their commitment to high quality care, staff members consistently exceed the state-mandated ten hours of ongoing training. It is not unusual for the staff of 20 to collectively accumulate more than 300 clock hours of training in one year. Sharon routinely encourages staff members to further their education. She connects them with scholarships, financial aid information, and often assists with tuition costs not covered by scholarships.
BFLC uses Creative Curriculum throughout the center. Each classroom, including Infants and Toddlers, runs on a routine schedule with weekly lesson plans. Creative Curriculum provides a framework for teachers to plan meaningful and relevant learning experiences that build upon the child’s interests and understanding. The curriculum integrates the learning of developmentally appropriate skills, concepts and knowledge in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology.
